The Deconstructed Beauty Myth

The same year that I graduated from high school, Naomi Wolf released her book, The Beauty Myth: How Images of Beauty are used against Women. And since then. femi-nazi’s have taken joy in arguing over it, time and time again.

“The basic premise of The Beauty Myth is that as women have gained increased social power and prominence, expected adherence to standards of physical beauty has grown stronger for women.”

I think that this is the case for many women, but not me! Now that I am 40, I do not look at images of women and long for the perfect face, the perfect hair and the perfect body. Ain’t nobody got time for that shit. (head tilt, finger snap)

I work with what I have currently hanging off my bones, and as as my face starts to collapse, I thought I would share with you some of my own beauty tips.

  • Cut facial hair with nail scissors
  • Do not pick your face unless you have grimy hands. This is best done in the rear vision mirror as you wait in the car for school pick up time.
  • Sucking on a strong mint, such as the old XXX mint, can be akin to a good brush and floss, where need be,
  • A swim in the pool can count as a shower.
  • A ponytail is a lackadaisical answer to an aversion of shampoo.
  • BB Cream is indeed, a gals best friend.
  • Ditto a liberal squirt of perfume.
  • You can actually clip and point your own nails, should you feel the urge.
  • You do not need to wash your bra everyday, but you do need to for your reg grundies.
  • Eyebrows are BACK! Pay attention to them.
  • But you do not need to pay attention to the hair on the back of your thighs. After all, you cannot see it and if someone else is going to notice the yeti-ness of them and judge you, it is a good thing that you have your back to them, as you walk away..

The Beauty Myth…

Where are you on the road to self acceptance?

PS. If you have a little time, I encourage you to watch this, from my mate Tracey Spicer.
