Old Friends

Wonderful break was had in Bali, with the 9 of us mainly behaving ourselves. Although three of our party did engage in some motorbike racing at midnight, and I am proud to say that I was not one of them. But my skin has come back to Sydney looking like a pubescent teenagers. Sunscreen, sweat and Singapore Slings will do that to a gal. Oh well. As they say, you reap what you sow….

Mum came along, as well as┬áher best mate Aunty Lois. I liken them to Edina and Patsy. I cannot imagine why…..

Aunty Lois and Mum. Please note the ever-present looming featured.

Aunty Lois is fond of a wine, the owner of the driest wit in the world and is quite evil, in the fun way! These two met in 1979 while on canteen duty at our then primary school. They bonded over bitching, when a teacher sent back a Vegemite sandwich, claiming there was not enough Vegemite on it.

Over the years there has been a few fall outs, mainly when other people bitched about the other to the other etc etc. A bit like what is going down in Real Housewives of Melbourne at the moment, or so I have been told. But they know each other as well as friends who have shared most of their loves together can.

Divorces, deaths, babies, grand-parenting, these two can easily represent the circle of life.

In a battle of the wits, Aunty Lois will take me down any day of the week.

While Mum provides the slapstick. Like yesterday…

We had hired a taxi for an hour to run a few last-minute errands. Mum was meandering down the crooked lanes, when the cab pulled up next to her and told her to get in. Aunty Lois, our real cab driver Wayan and myself watched on, puzzled somewhat, pondering whether mum had finally started to succumb to her threats of impending senility.

Within a few seconds, she sprang from that cab like she had sat next to a brown snake, only to find the three of us rolling around on the pavement.

One night I showed the two of them a YouTube clip that was my friends Charlotte’s absolutely favourite thing in the world. They immediately saw themselves in the same situation. I will leave it to you to figure out who is who.

Do you have a friend that you want to grow old with?
