Nothing could be finer than a-shopping in Umina!

Umina is a little seaside town situated on the NSW Central Coast. Named after the aboriginal meaning, Place of Sleep, it is indeed a place that I sleep solidly. It is also the nearest township to Jabba the Hut, so I have gotten to know it well over the years.

A trip to Umina should include the following;

Purchase the worlds best BBQ Chicken from Umina Charcoal Chickens. The lady behind the counter calls you love and every time I go there, I tell her how good her chooks are. They are apparently sourced from South Australia and are big and plump and juicy, wonderfully seasoned and very addictive. I know, it is hard to get excited about BBQ Chickens, but if you have been there, you will know what I mean.

Once you have your BBQ Chook, I suggest you go and visit the gals at a sweet little independent book store, called The Book Bazaar. I have never taken to reading a novel on a device, it doesn’t seem right to me, which is a bit ironic considering I am a lady writer of the internets…. But these chicks know their stuff, the store is well stocked and they are very helpful in advising you in titles that could be your next holiday read.

So you have your chook and your book, but you fancy a coffee. The best coffee can be found is at Ruby’s Cafe. This cafe also sells second-hand books, but it is the coffee that draws me in. Things in Umina take a little longer to happen, and this includes the making of the coffee, but holiday towns move at their own pace, and you cannot argue with that.

And what about a little retail action? *rubs hands, gets out credit card, feel sad about the state of credit card balance*

Well there are two stores that are next door to each other. The brand new home porn emporium Honey I’m Home is a gorgeous collection of homewares and sensational gifts. Why, I was in there today buying The Original Mrs Woog’s Birthday gift!

They are at 350 West Street Umina. Tell them Mrs. Woog sent you!

Then head next door to Tribe Living for a little more home porn with an ethnic edge and a great collection of Australian Designers and their clothes. The gals that work there are stylish, helpful and friendly. The store is always turning things over so there is constantly something new to drool over.

Sorry Nikki, I have flogged your pic….

Now, for my annual lecture about supporting local businesses! Just do it ok,  because if you don’t then we will all end up wearing the same thing. Plus of course, jobs are created and the rest of the sensible arguments.

Where are you holidaying?

Please feel free to give a shout out to some great local businesses in the comment section!
