Back to School and all the feelings.

Brought to you by Big W

My baby is going into Year 6 this year! Holy smackers I have no idea where that time went. It seemed just yesterday that I walked into school with him. We had to line up at the desk that alphabetically corresponded with your surname.

I watched the other mums sign their kid in and hand them over, off to the big adventure that is big school. I watched them cry and I was all like…

“Oh, give it a break….”

Yes, I was being a judgy cow. For at least a few minutes until it was Horatio’s turn, where I dissolved into huge ugly tears. They came from no-where! I had no idea that I would act like that. So now when I see new kindy Mum’s having a bit of a weep…. I TOTALLY UNDERSTAND WHY!

The other thing that makes me cry is the cost of sending kids back to school. So I went on an investigative mission for Big W, to see where we could find the best bargains…

As soon as you enter Big W you are made well aware that IT IS BACK TO SCHOOL TIME, with a huge display of everything you need. I sat back and watched, as some parents, who were obvious experts in this area, go at that display with stealth-like precision. I was very impressed with one Mum of 3, who managed to get around with her kids in tow, as she made swift and calculated purchases.

But with me, sometimes too much choice is NOT a good thing. But having spent some time spying observing others, I give you my top 5 BACK TO SCHOOL Bargains from Big W.

Lunchbox – $12

Now as far as I am concerned SMASH Cold boxes are the best. I made the mistake once of buying 2 lunchboxes at great expense from a company that rhymes with…. say… Lupperware, and they didn’t see one school term out. I am sure you can get the lid replaced and all that, but who could be bothered.

We have been using Smash cold boxes ever since.

Drill Shorts – $8

Because my monkeys keep growing. There is a short option for girls too.

70 Piece Colouring Set – $5

A very economical way to make sure that your kids keep bringing home artwork from school that you have to stick on the fridge, until after a while it drives you nuts and you secretly try and chuck some of it out but your kids discovers what you are doing, and is shocked and offended.

Or so I have heard.

Quality HB’s – $1

5 pencils for $1? Yup.

And of course there is that old chestnut….

Grosby School Shoes. – from $29

Now of course in the interest of all things keeping it real, this is the first year that I have bought “budget” school shoes. These are from Grosby, are very sturdy and more importantly, they are leather. For $35, I am willing to give them a go. If they can take the pounding that is about to come their way, I will be impressed.
