So, you are travelling through the tiny back streets of Seminyak, Bali, when you take a right turn from the hustle and bustle and end up at the sweetest little place known as The Elysian. Forget about your bright, shiny, loud, show pony resorts. An archway of bamboo welcomes you to a little slice of heaven.

The ambience of calm envelopes you, insisting that you slow the fuck down and just be. And then your kid belts the other kid, and the magic spell is broken. If you are travelling as a couple, on honeymoon or on a romantic getaway, your can park your bag here for a few days and know that everything will be taken care for you.

I was so chilled that I didn’t even bother unpacking.

The Elysian is a hotel, but the accommodation is made up of private villas. This means you can either choose to do people watching by the main pool, or do some nudie swims in your private one. But let’s get down to the nuts and bolts of it, shall we?

If you, like me, are a fan of eating at the many fine eateries that Seminyak has on offer, (think Mamasan, Sip, The Cocoon Club, Motel Mexicola and Ku De Ta) then this is the perfect place to undo your belt after indulging. It is also very handy if you like shopping and also close to the fabulous Double Six Beach, which we visited each morning for supreme boogie boarding conditions. You are in the thick of things, but it doesn’t feel like it.

No buffet breakfast here. There are only 27 villas, so it is small enough to make everything to order. Good coffee, just ask for a double shot. The Breakfast menu was varied and had healthy options, and the kids had room service one night (pizza) which was delicious. I also hooked into some rice paper rolls, and Mr. Woog did his usual Club Sandwich evaluation which easily passed his high standards.

Unassuming yet elegant, the main drawcard here would have to be the staff. According to them, they have many return customers who come back each year. Most of the staff have been there since The Elysian opened 9 years ago. The service is extra special and nothing is too difficult. Need a few towels for the beach? They are waiting for you each morning in a beach bag. Five star all the way.

We booked the two bedroom villa and it was so spacious that you had a lot of privacy.

The room was serviced twice a day. I love it when you come home and find all the lights dimmed and the doonas turned down. Makes you feel a bit princessy.

There is no gym, which didn’t bother me in the slightest, but Mr. Woog is addicted and found one not far from the resort. There is a small spa which delivers a very good massage, at a very good price. The concierge are extremely happy to make bookings for you, arrange any transport and offer up solutions to any problems you have. Not that we had any at all.

It is small and intimate. Best suited to couples I think. Honeymoon? Romantic Escape? This is the perfect option for you.

We travelled to Bali during the Ash Cloud drama, where people’s flights were being cancelled and there was a great deal of uncertainty. Our flight out was on again, off again, no again, off again, and we were getting very limited information from Jetstar. The front desk knew that we were a bit fed up and anxious about the whole thing, so the magnificent Agus sent, without us even knowing, one of the drivers out to Denpasar Airport at midnight to get some answers about our flight. Our wake up call came in at 1am, with the news that our flight was going to go. When we arrived at reception, there was a couple of coffees, juices for the kids and a little something to eat, all without it being requested. The hotel car then took us to the airport, all without charge.

It was these little things that made The Elysian a complete standout. You were made to feel a part of the family, not a paying customer.

I had a coffee with Artini, who is the Director of Sales at the Elysian. She told me that if any WoogsWorld readers wanted to visit the resort to email her directly at [email protected] and not only will she personally handle your booking and give you the best rate she can, she will also discount your stay by a further 10%. Just mention Woogsworld in your email and she will take care of the rest. You will smile from the moment you drive down the Bamboo Arch of Heaven. I am already jealous of you.
